BCS works in neighborhoods impacted by systemic poverty. We believe all Brooklynites should have the resources, education, opportunities, and safety they need to thrive.
With over 50 award-winning programs and 28 locations across Brooklyn, BCS serves over 20,000 individuals in need annually. We empower Brooklyn residents to maximize their potential, serving low income Brooklynites of all ages: from early childhood to adults in their senior years. We strengthen communities by fostering the educational success of children, the leadership development of youth, the employment and housing stability of adults, the advancement of individuals living with disabilities, and the empowerment of seniors and families.

Meet Kayla, Alexis, and Maribel. All three are staff members at the after-school program at PS 21!Assistant Director Alexis Vivar explains how the program is more than just a childcare service. “Our curriculum this year is ‘Brooklyn and the Boroughs.’ [The kids] are exploring the culture of every borough. For example, during Black History Month, they had to choose someone from Black History who lived in Brooklyn to research.”The program is about more than just academics, Director Kayla Boyd adds, “The kids are learning how to regulate their emotions.” She continues, “Children don’t act out for no reason. They don’t, it’s as simple as that. My job is to make them feel as if I am here for them.”Maribel Mercado, an assistant teacher who’s been with the program for thirteen sums up her passion for the job: “There’s not a day that goes by that these kids don’t put a smile on my face.”Thank you Ms. Boyd, Mr. Vivar, and Ms. Mercado for your dedication to your students and the BCS community! Thanks to the tireless campaigning of human service workers across the City, starting in 2025, NYC human service contracts will include a 3% Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) each year for the next 3 years. In addition, there will be 2025 Workforce Enhancement funding of $50 million! This is great news for the City of New York, BCS and Human Service workers across the City. Our fight for #JustPay doesn’t end here, but we are thrilled to celebrate this significant victory!#wearebcs #humanservicesny #cola #nonprofit #nyc #brooklyn
