Who We Are

For 144 years, the Brooklyn Bureau of Community Service has helped children reach their potential, families become stronger, and adults lead productive, fulfilling lives. We offer a diverse array of social services including vocational training and job placement; social support and mental health services for persons with disabilities; and child welfare and family support services such as foster care prevention, homemaker services, and group and family day care services.

We believe that each human being has the right to live a life of dignity, and can contribute uniquely to our shared society. Over the years, we have strengthened countless families at risk of separation; supported and stabilized people with psychiatric illnesses; helped adults with disabilities participate fully in the community; enabled people to move from welfare to work; and offered guidance, education and support to children.

One of the oldest and largest agencies in the borough, the Brooklyn Bureau is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3), non-sectarian, community-based social services agency.

Founded in 1866, the Bureau has:
 A staff of over 500
 17 sites throughout Brooklyn
 Over 300 volunteers

The Bureau is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors comprised of 25 corporate, professional and civic leaders as well as community representatives.

Last year, the Bureau served more than 11,000 persons, including thousands of children and adults who participated on a daily basis.
